Piercing Aftercare Guide: Step by Step to Healthy Healing

piercingbakımaftercare

Getting a new piercing is exciting, but the real work begins after the jewellery is placed. Without proper care, even the simplest earlobe piercing can become irritated or infected. We have put together the aftercare steps we use and recommend to our clients at our Kadıköy studio.

Cleaning Routine

Good news: piercing aftercare is far simpler than people think. You do not need complicated products.

  • Use a saline solution: Sterile isotonic saline is the safest option. Clean the area 1-2 times a day.
  • Wash your hands: Always wash your hands with soap before touching the piercing.
  • Dry gently: After cleaning, pat dry with a single-use paper towel; avoid cloth towels as their fibres can snag.
  • Do not fiddle: Constantly twisting or touching the jewellery slows down healing.

Healing Times

Not every piercing heals at the same rate. Approximate times are: earlobe 6-8 weeks, cartilage (helix) 6-12 months, nostril 3-6 months, navel 6-12 months. Do not change the jewellery before healing is complete. These times vary from person to person; patience is best.

What to Avoid

  • Stay away from pools, the sea, and bathtubs during healing.
  • Do not apply harsh chemicals like alcohol or hydrogen peroxide directly; they irritate the tissue.
  • Avoid sleeping on the piercing and the rubbing of tight clothing.
  • Do not switch to cheap, low-quality jewellery before healing; prefer surgical steel or titanium.

Warning Signs

Mild redness, swelling, and clear fluid are normal in the first days. However, if you have increasing pain, green-yellow foul-smelling discharge, spreading redness, or fever, consult a healthcare provider. If you suspect an infection, do not remove the jewellery yourself; this can trap the problem inside.
