How to Choose a Tattoo Studio in Istanbul: Kadıköy and Beyond

Istanbul's tattoo industry has seen extraordinary growth over the past decade. This growth creates both opportunities and risks: alongside exceptional artists, there are also studios that don't meet health standards, lack experience, or focus purely on price. Making the right choice is critical for a piece you'll carry for life.

Why Kadıköy Is the Hub

The vast majority of premium tattoo studios in Istanbul are clustered around Kadıköy — particularly in the Erenköy, Moda, and Yeldeğirmeni neighbourhoods. The reasons: relatively affordable rents made it easier for young talent to open studios; a cosmopolitan, arts-inclined demographic formed a natural client base; quality artists attracted each other. Ink People was founded in this ecosystem, in Erenköy.

Criteria for a Great Studio

  • Portfolio consistency: Individual photographs matter less than the artist's overall standard. You should see the same quality level across different pieces.
  • Healed tattoo photos: A fresh tattoo always looks good. Good artists don't hesitate to share healed work.
  • Sterilisation standards: The presence of an autoclave (sterilisation device) and single-use needles and materials is non-negotiable. Don't be afraid to ask.
  • Quality of communication: Artists who respond to your questions in detail and with patience are a good sign. Be wary of artists who say "we can do anything you want."
  • International experience: Participation in overseas festivals and guest artist sessions shows how committed a studio is to global standards.

The Price Trap

A cheap tattoo can end up costing more — both aesthetically and in health terms. Correction or cover-up work can be far more expensive than the original tattoo. If your budget is limited, going to a quality artist for a smaller piece is always smarter than a large but poor-quality tattoo.

Pre-Appointment Checklist

  • Review the artist's Instagram or website
  • Check Google or social media reviews
  • Make first contact via DM or WhatsApp with your reference images
  • Ask about price range, consultation, and deposit policy
  • Assess the physical condition of the studio (cleanliness, equipment) before your appointment
