Tattoos in Summer and Sun Protection: Keeping Your Colours Vivid
When summer arrives everyone wants to enjoy the sun, but for your tattoos the sun is the biggest threat. Ultraviolet rays break down ink over time; vivid colours fade and crisp blacks turn grey. The good news is that with a few simple habits you can keep your tattoo looking like new for years. At our Kadıköy studio, this is the advice we give our clients most often.
Fresh Tattoos and the Sun: The First Few Weeks
A newly done tattoo is like an open wound and should never be exposed to direct sunlight until it heals (usually 2-4 weeks). During this period even sunscreen is not recommended; instead, cover the tattoo with loose, breathable clothing. Sunburn during healing can cause permanent colour loss and discolouration.
Sun Protection for Healed Tattoos
Even after your tattoo is fully healed, protection is essential. Before heading outdoors, keep these in mind:
- Use a high SPF: Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30, ideally SPF 50.
- Reapply regularly: Apply again every 2 hours, and after swimming or sweating.
- Seek shade: Keep the tattooed area in the shade between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun is harshest.
Sea, Pool, and Salt Water
For fresh tattoos, the sea and pool are off-limits for at least 3-4 weeks. Salt water and chlorinated water irritate an unhealed tattoo and increase the risk of infection. For healed tattoos, swimming is fine; just remember to rinse off and reapply sunscreen after getting out of the water.
Long-Term Colour Protection
The secret to keeping your tattoo vivid over the years is consistency. Keep your skin moisturised, apply active sun protection every summer, and avoid excessive tanning. Colour tattoos are more sensitive to the sun than black-and-grey work, so protection is especially critical for coloured pieces.
