Everything You Need to Know Before Getting a Piercing
A piercing might seem like a simple decision on the surface — but done correctly it brings years of pleasure; done incorrectly it can lead to serious problems. Starting with the right information makes everything easier.
Types of Piercing
The most common piercing types and approximate healing times:
- Earlobe: 6–8 weeks (fastest healing)
- Nose (nostril): 4–6 months
- Helix / cartilage: 6–12 months
- Tragus / daith: 6–12 months
- Eyebrow: 6–9 months
- Navel: 6–12 months
- Industrial: 6–12 months
Choosing Jewellery
The first jewellery choice is critical. Cheap metal or non-surgical steel materials make healing harder and create allergy risk. Recommended materials: G23 titanium, implant-grade steel, niobium, or solid gold (14k+). Plated jewellery is never appropriate for a fresh piercing.
Finding the Right Studio
When choosing a studio for piercing, look for: single-use needle use (no guns!), presence of an autoclave (sterilisation device), artist certification or experience, and the quality of jewellery used. A piercing gun is never recommended for cartilage areas — the parts cannot be adequately sterilised and can cause traumatic healing.
Day-Before Preparation
Come with adequate sleep and a good meal. Avoid blood thinners (aspirin, alcohol) for 24 hours beforehand. Choose comfortable clothing — easy access to the piercing area is important.
