How to Care for Your Piercing: The Complete Guide
You got a piercing — congratulations. Now the most important phase begins: the healing process. Even a perfect piercing can cause problems without proper care.
The Basic Care Routine
Twice a day, clean with sterile saline solution (salt water spray). Application: spray onto the front and back of the piercing, allow to dry naturally. That's it. Rubbing, rotating, or touching excessively slows healing.
What to Avoid
- Don't use alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or betadine — these irritate the tissue
- Don't rotate or move the jewellery unnecessarily
- Avoid pools and the sea for at least 4–6 weeks (longer for cartilage)
- Avoid applying makeup, lotion, or perfume directly onto the piercing
- Don't touch with unwashed hands
Area-Specific Notes
Ear: Pay attention to sleeping position. Avoid lying on the pierced ear — a travel pillow or ring pillow helps.
Nose: If you wear glasses or a mask, take care not to put pressure on the piercing area. Be careful when coughing or sneezing.
Navel: Avoid tight, high-waisted clothing. Compressing the piercing seriously prolongs healing.
When Should You Be Concerned?
Mild swelling, redness, and clear/white discharge are normal in the first weeks. However, if there is severe pain, heavy yellow-green discharge, or fever, call the studio or see a doctor. Don't remove the jewellery yourself — this increases the risk of trapping infection inside.
