Getting Your First Tattoo: Where Do You Even Start?
The decision to get your first tattoo can be as overwhelming as it is exciting. What style do you want? Where will you put it? Will it hurt? Let us give you honest answers.
Deciding on a Design
Don't rush. An idea that stays with you for a year is usually a good one. Create inspiration boards on Pinterest and Instagram, explore different styles. Your first tattoo doesn't have to be "meaningful" — finding something beautiful is reason enough.
Choosing Placement
Generally less painful areas for a first tattoo: forearm, calf, upper shoulder. Ribs, ankle, spine, and hands are more challenging both in terms of pain and aftercare. Your artist can also suggest the best placement for your design.
The Pain Question
Everyone's pain threshold is different. Most people describe the forearm or calf as "uncomfortable but manageable." A constant scratching or burning sensation during the session is normal. Breathing exercises and music help a great deal.
Choosing an Artist
When choosing a studio, look at the portfolio more than the price. Find an artist who is strong in the style you want. In the initial consultation, make sure your artist listens to your ideas and assesses feasibility.
The Day Arrives
Sleep well the night before. Have a proper breakfast. Bring a sugary drink (blood sugar can drop). Relax — within hours you'll have something permanent and beautiful.
