Tattoo Myths and Facts: A Guide from Istanbul
Although tattooing is a tradition thousands of years old, plenty of misconceptions still surround it. At our Kadıköy studio we run into these myths every week. For someone considering their first tattoo, this misinformation can cause unnecessary anxiety. Let us compare the most common claims with the facts.
Myth: Getting a Tattoo Is Unbearably Painful
The truth is that pain is entirely personal and depends on placement. Most people describe the process as "manageable discomfort." Fleshy areas like the forearm, calf, and shoulder are generally more comfortable, while spots close to the bone such as the ribs, ankle, and inner arm are more sensitive. A good artist communicates with you, takes breaks, and keeps the process manageable.
Myth: Tattoos Are Invisible on Dark Skin
This is simply not true. There is a suitable design and technique for every skin tone. An experienced artist adjusts contrast and ink choice to match your complexion. What matters is the artist's experience and portfolio working with different skin types.
Myth: Tattoo Ink Enters the Bloodstream and Is Harmful
Ink settles into the dermis, the skin's middle layer, not the bloodstream. That is why it is permanent. Inks used in professional studios comply with safety standards. The real determining factor is sterilisation: single-use needles, unopened sterile packages, and a hygienic workspace are essential. Do not hesitate to ask about these points when choosing a studio.
Myth: Laser Removes Any Tattoo Without a Trace
Laser technology has advanced, but "complete and scar-free" removal is not always guaranteed. Colour, ink depth, and skin type all affect the result. That is why the best approach is to choose the right design with the right artist from the start. It is healthiest to view a tattoo as a permanent choice rather than a passing whim.
Myth: You Cannot Get a New Tattoo in Summer
You can, but during the healing period you need to protect it from the sun, sea, and pool. A fresh tattoo is sensitive to direct sun and chlorinated water. When planning, you simply need to factor in this few-week aftercare window.
